Looking back at the last year in the garden
Today we ’re in Canton , Massachusetts , visiting with Jana Trusz .
Looking back at my garden during 2022 , I have many lessons to teach . The drouth was incredibly difficult and made me reevaluate what was in my garden , what survived and what did n’t , and how I will move forward . First , I will be installing adrip - irrigation systemas soon as it is quick enough to do so ; second , I will research plant that aredrought tolerantandpropagatemore of what hold up . One of my favorite way to circularise new plants is through winter sowing . I have had great success with it , plantingdigitalis , delphiniums , lupines , andcosmos , to name a few , in miniskirt - glasshouse on my deck .
The difficult year made the succeeder so perfumed . Here are some of thevignettesdiscovered in my garden .

Black cohosh(Actaearacemosa , Zones 4–8 ) and impatiens(Impatienswalleriana , Zones 10–11 or as an annual )
I am one of those nurseryman who realise the stunner in strange places . I find out these happy Johnny jump - ups(Violatricolor , cool - season one-year ) rise from a crack at the radix of my stairs , and they brought a smile to my expression .
I bought this midget ‘ Ukigumo’Japanese maple(Acer palmatum‘Ukigumo ’ , Zones 5–9 ) age ago coming all the way from California . I nurtured it , kept it in a hatful , stuff it into myshed , and nestled it in stalk for the winter . I knew that as it age it had the possibility of throw ashen foliage in the spring . This was why I had to have it . Finally , I decided thislittle treehad to go into the undercoat , and I hoped for the best . It has these beautiful pagoda - shaped leaf that start out white and turn to mottle pinko and green as the season progresses . I implant dogtooth violet violets below to mimic the leaf cast . It survived the drought and put on such a display . I cart neighbors walking by to see this marvel , expecting them to write down its name and expect where I got it . I am so awful by this sweetheart , but they seem fine with just seeing it in my yard .

Here are the dogtooth violets(Erythronium‘Pagoda ’ , Zones 4–9 ) with the budding leafage of the ‘ Ukigumo ’ maple above them .
This was aMother ’s Daygift , and it never end to give me a pleasure each spring . Piceaabies‘Pusch ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) is modest , easy to grow , and produces these beautiful hoot - color cones that eventually sprain a beautiful shadowiness of brown .
My cotoneaster(Cotoneastersp . , Zones 4–8 ) , the industrial plant that spurs many a conversation about its right pronunciation . I implant this many years ago , and it has grown into a waterfall . I love the way it spills over the rampart . It has tiny pink white flowers in spring that flex toberriesloved bybirds . Eventually it sheds its leaves and berries but still provides a beautiful structure in the wintertime . There is anespalierapple tree(Malushybrid , Zones 3–8 ) to the left , covered bysweet autumn clematis(Clematis terniflora , Zones 4–9 ) .

Myrhododendronssuffered greatly , even some of the big ones that are more than 30 old age old . This gnome ‘ Black Widow ’ rhodie(Rhododendron‘Black Widow ’ , Zones 6–9 ) wangle these large flowers . The flowers actually appear much dreary and more dramatic in less light , looking almost black .
MySempervivum arachnoideum(Zones 5–8 ) did well , but we have had an implausibly squiffy drop and winter and I am waiting to see what happens .
Here is the sempervivum growing under the birdbath . Again , this was earlier in the season .

Even though I have many types ofmilkweedthroughout my garden , themonarchswere wanting for a couple of geezerhood . Last year I had the privilege of following the ontogeny of a fourth genesis from orchis to hatching !
I in reality saw the Danaus plexippus lay this egg and take in daily until it became a very hungrycaterpillar . Then it attached to a folio , created a gold - crested chrysalis , and hatched out at the end ofSeptemberready to start the journey south ! !
I would like to stop with a wide-eyed activity I enjoy doing . Using any sort of pan , I conglomerate items from my yard and/or slice of fruit , cranberries , whatever you wish , and leave them outside to freeze . I do put a stick or pale yellow near the top to run a bowed stringed instrument through to hang it . I have been known to give these as gift to help recipient get through the wintertime .
