In the spring of 2017 , I was sent four plants of an unnamed rugosa rose for trialing at the University of Tennessee Gardens in Jackson . They were planted in unamended ground , water in , mulched , and left to the mercifulness of Mother Nature . By summertime ’s oddment they had already begun to make an impression on me with their beautiful disease - barren leafage and lovely fragrant flowers . After the second year , I have a go at it we were fit to be friends .
In 2019 my newfangled supporter were given the name Lotty ’s beloved ® . This rugosa rose was developed in the Twin Cities region of Minnesota by greenhouse examiner turn rosarian Chuck Bock . “ Lotty ’s Love ” is a reference to his wife , Charlotte , whose nickname was Lotty .
Lotty ’s Love ® has semi - doubled Battle of Magenta pinkish efflorescence that are 4 in across and emit a delightful , sweet , spicy , cinnamon - like fragrance . Flowering begin with a big show in other summertime and continues with a firm but more subdued display until freeze . The heyday are a favorite of bees and other pollinator . Deadheading is not required ; however , the removal of spend blossom will boost more abundant blooming . Blossoms that are left unaffected become attractive orange hips , which are not only a delight for birds but also can be used to make jams and jellies .

The Latin wordrugosameans “ wrinkled ” and bear on to the leaves . The cryptic unripened glossy farewell of Lotty ’s Love ® are heavily vein , giving them a beautiful texture . The attractive foliation is enough to make this rugosa turn out landscape - worthy even when not in bloom .
Rugosa roses are known for their moth-eaten hardiness , drought tolerance , and disease ohmic resistance , and Lotty ’s Love ® is no exclusion . Without supplemental water supply and with no preindication of disease in hot , humid Tennessee , our test plants averaged 5 feet marvelous and 8 feet full at the end of their quaternary year — well beyond the 3½-foot - tall by 4 - invertebrate foot - all-inclusive dimensions noted by the stock breeder .
Lotty ’s Love ® works well in borders , as a specimen , and as parry . Unlike many other roses , rugosas opt not to be heavily pruned . These roses address drouth very well , and they tolerate wretched soil , sandy soil , clay grunge , and salt . If you are searching for a rose that flourish with virtually no attention , I extremely recommend Lotty ’s Love ® .
