TroublesomePlant –Ornamental cherries
( Prunusspp . and cvs . )
1. Coralburst®Crabapple
Name:Malus‘Coralcole’
USDA hardiness zones:3 to 9
Size:12 foot tall and 10 feet wide
Conditions : Full sunshine to partial wraith ; fat , moist , well - drain land

When I move from the mid - Atlantic to the Northern Plains , I had to leave ornamental cherries behind ; they just ca n’t stand the protracted subzero temperatures and bracing Arctic winds that batter the plains . anthesis cultivated crab apple , however , are best in this cold , drier climate than they are in the humid Southeast . I especially like Coralburst ® for its twofold , tufted , candy pinkish flowers , which make it a dead clone for the in demand ornamental cherry named ‘ Kanzan ’ . Coralburst ® , like many crab apple , is hardy to Zone 3 , so it can handle just about any wintertime Canada can air our path .
TroublesomePlant –Rhododendrons and azaleas
( Rhododendronspp . and cvs . )
2. Northern Lights Series Azaleas
Name:Rhododendroncvs., such as ‘Northern Hi-Lights’ (pictured), ‘Mandarin Lights’, and ‘Lemon Lights’
Zones:3 to 9
Size:6 to 8 feet improbable and wide
atmospheric condition : Full Sunday to dappled specter ; moist , well - drained , acidic soil

I thought I was leaving behind forever the most iconic shrub of the southern states : the rhododendron . But to my delight , I ’ve found a rattling serial publication of deciduous azaleas that do beautifully for us , bred from native rhododendron species . The Northern Lights series is an attractive sept of deciduous shrub , which bloom to drum the ring in late bounce with big fragrant flower clustering . They prefer a bright understory position and can be fussy about adequate grime drain , but when they ’re well-chosen , they ’re an amazing sight .
TroublesomePlant –Crape myrtles
( Lagerstroemia indicacvs . )
3. Red Buckeye
Name:Aesculus paviaand cvs.
Zones:5 to 9
size of it : Up to 15 foot magniloquent and 10 feet spacious
I ’ve always respected crape myrtle for their showily vibrant blossom spikes and beautiful silky luggage compartment , but they just wo n’t grow in this clime . I ’m learning to use , alternatively , the red horse chestnut . This native tree , if maintain as a single- or multitrunk tree rather than as a shrub , shares a lot of landscape quality with French pancake myrtle . Red buckeye ’s upright spike of vivid red-faced flush in spring are reminiscent of French pancake myrtle ’s summer flowers — but without the perpetual mess . The plant ’s smooth bark is lovely in wintertime , and the tree will reach about the same peak as French pancake Vinca minor . And for all of French pancake Vinca minor ’s floweriness , it ca n’t compete with red buckeye ’s major magnetized appeal for hummingbirds and butterfly .
