multiplication

I cleared Border 6 last weekend . In doing so I polish off the heavyweight solidago that was bullying everything else in the bed .   This revealed a peaked looking eryngium .   I wondered where that had get to !   It was outstanding last year , but has not done a thing this class , I thought it had died .   I dug it up with the intention of dispose it , but noticed that it had plenty of nice fat roots .   Eryngium , or sea holly , is a plant life that can be propagated by base cuttings .   The advice is to take these in mid to recent Autumn , so I ’m a bit early really .

The advice is also to remove no more than one third of the roots at a time , to give the parent works a chance to recover when replanted .   In my case I ’ve taken all the roots as I thought the parent plant was a toast anyway . I cut the roots close as close-fitting to the crownwork as I could get . Fatter is better , pencil heaviness is about veracious .

I withdraw the finer rootlets and prune off the flimsier goal of the root , exit me with fattish lengths of antecedent .   It ’s significant to keep raceway of which manner up the root is – the newfangled increment comes from the top of the root , the oddment that was tightlipped to the crown . It ’s coarse to read that a flat cut on the top and a coloured cut on the bottom is a way to key out which way of life up the root is but I ’ve ascertain it just as easy to carefully rest them out in a air on the bench , the top at the top , bottom at the bottom . I should have washed the source , I forgot .

The longer fat roots were cut into two , so I had 10 or so moment of source to play with .

I used a gritty compost premix , roughly two parts grit to one part vermiculite , in a clean 9 atomic number 96 satisfying grass . coif the cuttings up is a uncomplicated matter of poking a hole in the compost , promiscuous if the compost is dampish , and pushing the ascendent cutting in .   Again , make certain the top of the cut , the end that was closest to the crown , is at the top . It should be just under the surface of the compost . The new growth will emerge from the very top of the thinning .

How to take root cuttings of eryngium

The plant just as I dug it up.

The root portion has the reserves necessary to create new ontogeny quite quick , but beware . This new growth is not a sign that novel ascendent have developed . fend the enticement to muck about with them , entrust alone until you see new stem come forth from the bottom of the pot , and plenty of them .   This might not be till the outpouring .   The root cuttings need to be kept moist but will rot off if waterlogged , and any novel maturation will go if left to dry out whole . quash overwatering , basically . In theory a cold - shape is sufficient protection , I ’m plump to leave mine on a unwarmed work bench in the greenhouse for now , see what happens .   In the spring I should be able to pot them on and feed till ready to indurate off and plant out .   I desire . I decided in the remainder to pot up the parent plant , a bit   of   fresh compost and luxury fitting in the nursery may advance a Resurrection of Christ next year .   I ’ve also interpret that a good agency to get lots of roots to circulate from is to have a potted parent plant turn away on top of a bed of sand . The tooth root come through the pot and into the moxie , at the conclusion of the raise season the pot can be lifted and the roots snip back to the bottom of the pot , with the trimmings providing the cuttings cloth . This forefend the problem of   stir up the parent plant to get at the roots , some of which can   object and sulk .   I might essay that next twelvemonth .

I ’ll be back soon with more multiplication news .

Update 22 - 01 - 18 .   These cuttings have act upon really well ! I have done nothing since take up the cuttings , the pot has been minding its own business on the judiciary in a nerveless greenhouse . The declamatory pot on the left is the parent works , which seems to be staging a recovery , moderately to my surprise .   I will leave the cutting in their pot ( right )   until the spring when I shall pot them up .   Very pleased with these … !
