Fans of the 1998 remake of the movieThe Parent Trapwith Dennis Quaid and Lindsay Lohan probably commend this key signature line : “ Meredith , do you want the 411 , the information , the lowdown on the other women in my dad ’s liveliness ? ” The 411 is important for us all , whether it ’s for date insight or for garden maintenance — such as insects that give on trees and shrubs , one of which is webworm . When you see a nest of these caterpillars on a leafy woody plant for the first metre , the “ What in the humanity is that ? ” alarm is sure to go off .
What are they?
Webworms are caterpillars . There are many specie , but all reasonably much behave likewise . They tend to feed in large numbers , esurient folio and making nests that motley in diameter from 6 inches to 3 feet . The nests often see a act dissimilar from one another and are located in dissimilar places on a plant . Generally , the first symptom of infestation are when beige to brown entanglement ( hence the name ) on an irregular basis close in the ends of lower branch or subdivision / trunk attachments . Initially , webworm caterpillars feed on the upper surfaces of leaves , but as they grow in size of it they eat most of the leaf surface . During the final stages of development , they depart the WWW and crawl to a convenient concealment stead such as fallen leaf bedding under the canopy or under bark scales on the automobile trunk , where they produce a pupal pillow slip and enter their next life microscope stage .
How to manage these pervasive pests
The serious intelligence is that coarse webworms that feast on deciduous Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree are “ season specific , ” which mean they are present for the current produce time of year only . Pests that tend to be more life - imperil for woody plants infest or taint permanent flora parts such as branches , bole , and ascendent . Of course , this does n’t imply webworm are n’t to be taken seriously — just that there are certainly more impactful and life - threatening woody plant job , include bore bit , cankers , and wilt . The key to managing webworms is being alert to their potential presence in the landscape and then being ready to interpose to protect your high - time value landscape painting plants . interposition could be as elementary as using a broom to transfer them from the tree diagram or shrub to the methamphetamine . Alternatively , you could apply an organic insect powder such as Bt , insecticidal soap , or Spinosad , or a synthetic insecticide such as permethrin , being sure to read and follow all label direction . Make notes in your garden diary ( and include a few photos ) about their timing and which plants they fed upon , and remind yourself to take mitigation steps as ahead of time as possible .
