Skipping the grass to create a beautiful wildlife habitat
Today ’s pic arrive from Lisa McMillin in Boise , Idaho .
I populate in Boise ’s historic North End , in a cottage more than 100 years old . I ’ve been gardening for 30 years , 15 fanatically . I have a little urban center yard that ’s Wildlife Habitat certified , with intellectual nourishment plant , water , and tax shelter . My front railyard has no forage and is full of sunflowers .
Orange helianthemum with gray - blue foliation ( rock’n’roll rise , probablyHelianthemum nummularium‘Henfield Brilliant ’ , Zones 4–9 ) .

Masses of sunflowers(Helianthus annuus , annual ) trace the walk up the front thou . Beautiful to look at , they are majuscule food for pollinator and boo .
inglorious - eyed Susans ( Rudbeckiahirta , Zones 3–7 ) dominate this layer with their glorious chickenhearted - and - orange flowers .
Clary sage ( Salviasclarea , Zones 5–9 ) is in full bloom , with each bloom punt by a great bract that is even showier than the genuine flowers . This beautiful plant is a biennial or short - lived perennial , and Lisa calls it Audrey , after theLittle Shop of Horrorsplant .

The clary salvia ( or Audrey , if you prefer ) earlier in the season , with the blossom buds just begin to develop .
Black cherry genus Petunia ( yearly ) premix with lettuce in the early summertime . Little clary sage is in the background , only an inch high-pitched at this time .
Digitalisobscura(Spanish foxglove , Zones 4–9 ) is a adorable recurrent digitalis that is well adapted to dry climates than many of the more common foxgloves . And what a wonderful people of colour !

Lisa loves this goldenrod ( Solidago ) hybrid because it ’s shaggy-haired , tops out at 2 feet , and blooms on the Fourth of July ! This looks like it might be the miscellanea ‘ Golden Baby ’ , which was develop in Europe from North American aboriginal species for use as a cut peak .
A velvet plant ( Verbascumsp . ) flower with blank flower petal and touchy purple tomentum on the stamen .
Like the other species of milkweed , showy milkweed ( Asclepiasspeciosa , Zones 3–9 ) is a central source of food for monarch butterfly stroke and caterpillars .
