A bright, but brief, flower
Today Lynn Crawford is sharing a very special works with us .
Here are some pic of my dark - bloom cereus(Epiphyllum oxypetalum , Zones 10–11 or as a houseplant ) . I have had the industrial plant for numerous geezerhood , and it has never bloomed . It is a very untempting , ungainly looking cactus . I put it outside this summertime , back by the shed , only a few steps aside from the compost pile . To my surprise about three weeks ago , I point out that it had two buds coming out of a leaf ( very strange ) . I watched it get large and eventually brought it inside to learn the operation . I have attached some photograph at several stages .
Last hebdomad it bloomed ! multitude have been get laid to have party to celebrate this “ Princess of the Night ” event . The Nox before I had an appointment of dinner and a movie , and I had to have a plant sitter who had my number on speed dial should it have decided to blossom that nighttime .

Nevertheless , it look until the next nighttime . The cognitive process start about 8:00 and continued scuttle until 10:00–11:00 . The fragrancy was delicious , and the bloom was spectacular , approximately 8 inches across . The plant only blossom once a year for only one night , and the flower is wilted by the next day . It was surely worth the postponement .
develop flower bud . Looking promising !
Close - up of the bloom buds . They ’re beautiful even at this stage .

The flower fully open , beginning to shed copious fragrance into the night .
Two flowers twisting together . This beautiful and unusual cactus is aboriginal to Mexico and piece of Central and South America . The immense flower with their powerful bouquet lure in bats to pollenate the blooms .
A close - up of the striking flush . Usually we cerebrate that a plant that blooms all summer long is the best , but there is a heap to be said for a plant that gives just a brief , but very special , presentation . The drama of call the one special night that these blossom can give a extra excitement to the garden that not much else can repeat .
