Since medieval times, garden-grown sage has soothed digestive troubles, cured coughs and treated sore throats. It also makes one delicious herbed stuffing for the holidays.

Sage Brings Back Memories

Thanksgiving has always been my favourite holiday .   As a little girl , I loved watching my mom prepare the menage ’s vacation meal from start to finish . It was fun to check her hand-to-hand struggle   the Republic of Turkey into the pan former Thanksgiving sunup and then scarf out it with her dwelling - made salvia wampum gorge .

That dressing take   several days to make because she started with a loaf of squishy - fresh bread and placed it on trays so it could   dry out completely . The night before the big day , she ’d saute the celery and onion , tot the dried salvia , mix it together and lieu in a bowl in the electric refrigerator . The next morning she ’d   stuff   the bomb , skewer it shut   and   slide it into the oven to roast for minute .

It ’s been many years since my mama made her sage gorge , but I can still see her wearing her favorite proscenium and standing in the kitchen using her work force to mix the   sage with the bread cube in the big yellow-bellied bowl .

I care I could say I espouse her Thanksgiving morning rite exactly , but I do n’t .   I ’ve commute the routine , adapt the recipe and stop stuffing my turkeys year ago . However , I   still mix it up by hand .

Sage is Easy to Grow

Sage is so easy to maturate , it ’s a shame to use pulverized poultry seasoning from the store for a home - made repast . Salvia officinalisis the culinary salvia I grow to utilize in my herbed clams mixture . It can be   started by transplanting   or cuttings   and it grows equally well in the garden or in a   container on the terrace .   I apply sage impertinent by gazump a few of the grey - dark-green parting from the plant life   or by drying them to tally an earthy flavor to   recipes .

Dress Instead of Stuff

When the   salvia - bread mixture is baked   in a casserole rather of stuffed into the bird , it ’s   called “ dressing . ”   Even though I know the flavor is improved when used as stuffing , it ’s safer to cook   it outside the skirt . This shrink the risk of undercooking the turkey and it   provide me to control the amount of fat in the dressing .

Sage Stuffing Recipe

Whether you decide tostuff your turkeyor make a side dish of dressing , a loaf of moth-eaten bread make an excellent groundwork and it ’s economical , too .

Ingredients
