Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday . For decennary , fellowship and friend have gathered at my theatre , a 200 - year - old Colonial , to celebrate the bounty of the season . The weather might be raw and chilly , but the woodstoves are lit and the conversation flows , as dish after dish is brought to the table in this long and leisurely meal .
I ’d love to be able to say that the intact repast comes from my garden , but that would n’t be rightful . Nevertheless , the garden is well represented , both on the table and around the elbow room . Garlic , hot peppers , and herbaceous plant advert from the beams , and the side table is festoon with bowls and basket of onion plant , shallots , squash , and pumpkins .

After the appetizers , we move toleek soup , a longtime family favorite . This year , the leeks look strong , so we will be answer a homegrown soup . Into the stuffing goes my Petroselinum crispum and garlic , along with some dried basil , hot peppers , and maybe even some chestnuts , if we get them before the squirrel do .
At a traditional issue such as this , my kinsperson expects no surprise , though I am emboldened from time to clip to depart the computer menu just a shade . I doubt that knock turkey will ever give way to salmon or that candied sweet tater will grant to mashed potatoes , but less radical substitution do pass . Slow - cooked green beansmay remain firm in for nettled Brassica oleracea italica ; a tartfruit granitamay replace a green salad after the master course .
Several eld ago , I broke into my hoard of icy blueberries , and blueberry pie was add to the afters carte . It prove very popular , served alongside pumpkin Proto-Indo European and orchard apple tree pie . Most people try all three . This year , my son’scrabapple piewill make its unveiling .
